Beginning Essentials Part 2: Popular Subject Matter

How to paint popular subjects in watercolor-7 videos of instruction

In the lessons of Essentials of Beginning Watercolor Part II, I teach the techniques and approaches for painting subject matter that many like to incorporate into their paintings.

Part I should be taken first if you are starting to paint watercolor for the first time. If you have already learned how to put color down on paper as a beginner, or simply want to brush up on technique, you will definitely enjoy this course.

When I first started to paint, I would become frustrated when I had a great idea for a painting but didn't know the best approach or technique for tackling certain parts of the painting. For example, I wanted to paint landscapes, but I didn't know the different ways to paint trees or rocks.

In this bundled course of 7 lessons, I demonstrate, step-by-step, different techniques we can use to paint subjects like rocks, trees, waves, and skies.

Note: It's important to take your time in practicing these techniques as you work through this course. Master these subjects first rather than jump in and try to paint an entire composition right away. Take the pressure off yourself and focus on practicing each technique before moving on to the next lesson.

In this course, you will learn:

  • Twelve fun watercolor textures, and how and when to use them
  • How to paint an abstract, to loosen you up and practice the textures you have learned

Subject matter I cover includes:

  • Several types of rocks
  • Dynamic skies
  • Fruit
  • Crashing and calm waves
  • Several different types of trees

Once you learn the approaches for painting different subject matter, you will feel more confident pulling together all of the skills you're learning, which we do together in Part III.

You can go at your own pace in the comfort of your own home! With me as your guide, giving you step-by-step direction throughout this series, you will learn the skills and techniques you need to start painting in watercolor and will soon be creating works of art on your own!

As a native of San Diego and graduate of San Diego State University, I have been painting and exhibiting my work for more than 30 years throughout Southern California. The bold lines, fluid shapes, and my color palette are influenced by my father’s paintings and my degree in graphic design.

My work is inspired by the idea of capturing that emotional and visceral response we feel when we see a beautiful but fleeting image—a moment of color, intensity, movement, and expression that stays with us long after.

While known for my representational and abstract work, my love is for portraits, and I have been honored with awards that include Best in Show for Cowboy at the San Dieguito Off Track Gallery and the Logan Award and Golden Award for Maasai Boy at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s 34th International Show.

For over a decade, I have been running workshops and juried watercolor shows in the San Diego area while teaching all levels of watercolor painting at a local community college and in my studio in Encinitas, CA. I find tremendous satisfaction in teaching and love seeing my students, improve, gain confidence, and express themselves through watercolor.
