8 Easy Ways To Apply Watercolor
Learn the different ways we apply watercolor to paper
This course is for beginners or painters who haven't had specific instruction on applying watercolor properly or who want simply to brush up on their skills.
In this course, I teach several techniques used to apply watercolor to paper — techniques that are fundamental to learning how to plan a composition. What your background will look like or how you layer color are decisions we need to make prior to starting our composition. In this course, I teach techniques that you will use over and over again to plan for and create the effects you are trying to achieve in your paintings.
One of the most critical parts of learning how to paint in watercolor is controlling the water. I focus on this challenge throughout this particular course because most beginning students either use too much or too little water. Learning how much water to apply for each effect is a skill you will improve upon every time you paint. Mastering this skill will have more impact on your work than almost any other watercolor painting skill you learn.
To get the most out of this course, set up your supplies and paint along with me. Stop the video as often as you like. Pay attention to my brushstrokes and water control. I’ll simplify the process for you and share secrets to getting flawless, beautiful washes.
We won’t jump into painting until we’ve built a solid foundation of skills. It doesn’t matter what style of painting you gravitate toward — loose and abstract or detailed and realistic — this course will show you the techniques for moving color on paper. If you don't have any idea about the kind of watercolor painting you think you would like to paint, simply practicing the skills in this course may help you uncover the way you prefer to manipulate watercolor.
I look forward to painting with you!
I purchases 8 Easy Ways to Apply Watercolor. I found the course was extremely helpful. Jaynes instruction was spot on and I loved the view over the shoulder watching her paint. I would recommend this course to anyone who paints in watercolor whether they're a beginner or advanced. I look forward to enrolling in many other courses.
As a native of San Diego and graduate of San Diego State University, I have been painting and exhibiting my work for more than 30 years throughout Southern California. The bold lines, fluid shapes, and my color palette are influenced by my father’s paintings and my degree in graphic design.
My work is inspired by the idea of capturing that emotional and visceral response we feel when we see a beautiful but fleeting image—a moment of color, intensity, movement, and expression that stays with us long after.
While known for my representational and abstract work, my love is for portraits, and I have been honored with awards that include Best in Show for Cowboy at the San Dieguito Off Track Gallery and the Logan Award and Golden Award for Maasai Boy at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s 34th International Show.
For over a decade, I have been running workshops and juried watercolor shows in the San Diego area while teaching all levels of watercolor painting at a local community college and in my studio in Encinitas, CA. I find tremendous satisfaction in teaching and love seeing my students, improve, gain confidence, and express themselves through watercolor.
