Painting 6 Different Types of Trees In Watercolor

Learn how to paint trees to improve your landscape paintings

Do you look at trees in landscape paintings and feel overwhelmed about where to start with all the textures and colors — especially with all of the shades of green? You're not alone. I’ll teach you some simple skills for tackling trees in watercolor.

In this course, you’ll learn how to create dimension, form, and depth with light and dark colors. You’ll discover how to use colors and textures to create simple shapes of foliage so you're not painting every leaf.

I’ll demonstrate how to paint popular trees and how to create textures to make their trunks look more realistic.

You'll learn interesting new skills and techniques that include:

  • Analyzing the various structures of trees to understand their shape and form
  • Maintaining your light source and using it to create depth in your trees
  • Mixing different values of greens so the foliage colors look more natural
  • Brush handling for painting foliage
  • Adding textures for the tree trunks and branches
  • Painting shadows in the foliage, on trunks, and on the ground
  • Handling the sky when painting trees

This course is for beginner watercolor painters.

Let’s go paint together!

Jayne

As a native of San Diego and graduate of San Diego State University, I have been painting and exhibiting my work for more than 30 years throughout Southern California. The bold lines, fluid shapes, and my color palette are influenced by my father’s paintings and my degree in graphic design.

In much of my work, I seek to capture our emotional and visceral response to a fleeting but sublime moment in time, a combination of color, intensity, movement, and expression.

While known for my representational and abstract work, my love is for portraits, and I have been honored with awards that include Best in Show for Cowboy at the San Dieguito Off Track Gallery and the Logan Award and Golden Award for Maasai Boy at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s 34th International Show.

For over a decade, I have been running workshops and juried watercolor shows in the San Diego area while teaching all levels of watercolor painting at a local community college and in my studio in Encinitas, CA. I find tremendous satisfaction from teaching and seeing my students, improve, gain confidence, and express themselves through watercolor.
