The Color Corner
Learn About Color And Watercolor Pigments-3 Videos In This Course
In this course, you’ll learn how most colors can be created from just three basic colors. It's convenient to have more colors premixed and already in a tube, but you can mix 12 beautiful colors using just the three primary colors. This demonstration will walk you through a simple color wheel, and I’ll talk about mixing colors.
Also, as a beginning painter, using colors created from only a few pigments gives paintings a better cohesiveness--the colors tend to work harmoniously next to each other rather than if you use a wide selection of purchased colors that may not work well in the same painting. Understanding color takes quite a while, but this course will provide you a great foundation for learning more about watercolor pigments.
Each watercolor pigment has its own characteristic — from very transparent to thick and opaque. You’ll discover what transparent, opaque and staining colors are, as well as how to glaze with transparent colors.
Plus, you’ll learn basic color vocabulary and everything you need to know about watercolor materials.
This lesson’s exercise will challenge you to determine the characteristics of your own colors and even realize which colors you prefer to use when painting. The more you understand your own pigments and how to use them, the more successful you’ll be as a watercolorist!
As a native of San Diego and graduate of San Diego State University, I have been painting and exhibiting my work for more than 30 years throughout Southern California. The bold lines, fluid shapes, and my color palette are influenced by my father’s paintings and my degree in graphic design.
In much of my work, I seek to capture our emotional and visceral response to a fleeting but sublime moment in time, a combination of color, intensity, movement, and expression.
While known for my representational and abstract work, my love is for portraits, and I have been honored with awards that include Best in Show for Cowboy at the San Dieguito Off Track Gallery and the Logan Award and Golden Award for Maasai Boy at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s 34th International Show.
For over a decade, I have been running workshops and juried watercolor shows in the San Diego area while teaching all levels of watercolor painting at a local community college and in my studio in Encinitas, CA. I find tremendous satisfaction from teaching and seeing my students, improve, gain confidence, and express themselves through watercolor.
